Warm weather is expected over the long weekend and vegetation across the State remains dry. Bushfires are starting easily and very quickly developing into large fires that are difficult to control. Conditions can change quickly and people need to be ready to act, especially as the temperature and wind increase. The Fire Permit Period remains in place across the State. You need a fire permit for the burning of vegetation at all times during a declared Fire Permit Period regardless of the weather conditions. You do not need a permit for barbecues, campfires or incinerators provided you comply with the conditions associated with their use, including campfires and barbecues in our National Parks. To get a permit you simply have to contact your local Fire Permit Officer on free call 1800 000 699. (Permits are free). Every year a small number of fires cost the Tasmanian community dearly. Some of these fires escape from smaller fires that were lit for good reasons. If people are more careful with fire, the loss and damage to possessions, property and the environment can be greatly reduced. People heading off camping and bush walking over the long weekend are asked to take their gas cooking equipment and avoid using open fires where possible. People who light a campfire on their property must ensure the fire is never left unattended and they need to turn the coals over and use water to ensure the fire is completely extinguished. With dry conditions in many areas, extra care must be taken when using machinery that emit sparks, such as mowers, slashers, grinders and other cutting tools, as this type of activity may start fires. Tasmanians living in and around the bush need to review their Bushfire Survival Plan and be prepared to implement that plan if required.
