Was having a talk with my dear friend Vasuda Sharma told her I may not post this, for fear of being boycotted, but what the heck! Most musicians I know or have spoken to, feel the same sentiment youre about to read.. but no one says it. So here goes; A question to all venues, artist managers, booking agents, event organizers dealing with upcoming, not very established artists When an artist sends you their profile for a gig, most times requirements are: 1. Glossy / professionally done profile 2. links to music (good quality / studio quality) 3. Video links (professionally shot / good sound quality) 4. HD photographs etc .. etc.. The list goes on and on... To do all that an artist would require tons of money / big budgets, which most artists dont have, after taking into account cost of gear, jamroom expenses, travel, studio costs etc. Music doesnt pay much for artists who are not FAMOUS! But when it comes to keeping a budget for a band / artist most Venues / events / booking agents cry out saying they have no budgets, free gig, well promote you, or 8k - 20k budgets for an entire band!! Please tell me how do you expect artists to pay for all of the above demands when you have no budgets to pay the Artist!? Its like walking into a fine -dine restaurant and ordering steak with a creme brulee, but wanting to pay the cost of bhel puri!! I love music, I would hopefully want to do this for the rest of my life, or till Im stone broke. But what Id like to know is that like any other Industry since Music is an Industry too, why cant we have a few regulations in place so that young / new artists stop getting exploited for their talent. Cant we have a minimum fee structure in place where its not like one band gets Rs. 8,000 - 25,000 while another may get 2-6 lakhs! Why isnt anyone taking up this issue? This has been an issue for ever, why isnt anyone doing a thing? Am I wrong for asking these questions? Why is it that musicians are almost down to the level of beggars in this country? Beg for gigs, work etc..beg photographers to come cover your gig, which they readily come for (cause even they know there isnt any money!) Then beg people to come for those gigs, beg people to share your music, beg for your payments... and the begging continues! Arent start up musicians also deserving of respect?!
