Wasted money, ruined health Jun 09, 2013 | 23:07 Articles on smoking give a list of places where smoking is not allowed, but an important one is always missed out, and that is gas stations. Many people are unaware of the danger of smoking near the pumps while their car tanks are being filled up. It only needs the fumes to catch a spark, and a whole area could be blown up. All gas stations should display “No smoking” signs. Bus and taxi drivers still continue to smoke, to the annoyance of non-smoking passengers, even if they display a sign saying “No smoking”. Smoking damages other people’s health as well as one’s own. Few are aware of what second-hand smoke is, so more publicity is needed about it. Those who say it is their right to smoke are very selfish. It is up to them to not care about their health, but they should not make other people sick. Serious implementation of the law is needed. The Ministry of Health says it issued 30 fines so far this year for violations. This is nothing. There should have been 300 or more, especially one for the lawmaker seen on page one of The Jordan Times on June 5, 2013. How many times does one hear people complain that they never have enough money? Yet many of them waste it on cigarettes. Chris Larter, Amman
