Wasting #wheat a regular affair now 31.07.2014 #VADODARA: The authorities, it seems, have refused to learn anything from 2012s incident when thousands of wheat bags got drenched in the railway yard. Over 24,000 wheat bags got wet after it rained heavily in the city on the night of August 11 last year. Stray cattle feasted on the food grains that were meant for distribution among poor and for sale in open market. The incident had sparked controversy and the then BJP MP, Balkrishna Shukla had even promised to raise the issue in the Parliament. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) had sent 54,000 wheat bags to Vadodara on August 10, 2012 and the stock was offloaded at the railway yard. The Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) contractor had managed to shift just 30,000 bags to the CWC godown while the remaining bags were left in open at the railway yard. The CWC immediately blamed the contractor for delaying the transport of bags to the godown. The contractor had, however, claimed that non-availability of labourers lead to the delay. CWC had even issued notice to the contractor Shri Nidhi Corporation and sought explanation. CWC officials had blamed the railways too for lack of infrastructure for storing the wheat bags. A similar incident occurred in January this year when unseasonal rains lashed the city. A large stock of wheat bags stored in open at the railway yard was put at risk. FCI had claimed that there were no losses. timesofindia.indiatimes/City/Vadodara/Wasting-wheat-a-regular-affair-now/articleshow/39335438.cms
