Watching action films may make you more likely to pile on the pounds, according to a team at Cornell University that tried to establish which genres of television were worst. The findings, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, showed people snacked far more during action films. TV is linked to obesity because of junk-food advertising, sedentary behaviour and distracting people so they do not realise how much they are eating. The Food Doctor says the links here are obvious and should send out warning signs to us as its so easy to snack mindlessly whilst watching TV. Once again this means controlling blood sugar levels... To help control blood sugar levels try the following: Start the day with a low sugar breakfast, e.g. scrambled egg and tomatoes on wholemeal bread or porridge with fresh berries and seeds Swap all refined carbohydrates for complex ones, i.e. swap white bread, pasta and rice for wholegrain varieties Try to include protein at every meal to slow the absorption of glucose and keep your child feeling fuller for longer, e.g. lean meat, fish, eggs, beans, pulses and dairy products Swap fizzy drinks for water or diluted fruit juice Try to keep sweets and chocolates as a ‘treat’ once or twice a week and encourage more healthy snacks such as fresh fruit and yoghurt, raw vegetable sticks with hummus/salsa, boiled egg, celery sticks with peanut butter, plain popcorn, nut/seed bars, berry oatcakes, 70% dark chocolate.
