We Hail The Passage Of The Decent Work Bill, But… Yesterday, - TopicsExpress

We Hail The Passage Of The Decent Work Bill, But… Yesterday, the Liberian Senate concurred with the House of Representatives by giving approval of the much talked about ‘Decent Work Bill. The draft instrument was submitted to the National Legislature some four years ago by the umbrella group of workers in the country, the Liberia Labour Union, the Ministry of Labour and its partners. The instrument seeks principally to add value to workers across the country. The Senators approved the country’s minimum wage bill at 75 cent per hour amounting to 6.00 United States Dollars. This means that the least worker will now earn 180 per month. The bill in about a week time is expected to be sent to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for her signature. Under this arrangement, employers are now obligatory to pay their employees six United States Dollars a day and 180 United States Dollars per month as the least pay. Last year, the Lower House passed the draft bill into law, but regrettably failed to approve a minimum wage for workers in the country, and was sent to the Liberian Senate for concurrence. Liberians have hailed the passage of the draft instrument as a positive step in the right direction. We at the Women Voices Newspaper would like to equally add our voices to the many other voices hailing the good mood of members of the National Legislature in the passage of the country’s minimum wage law, which is first of its kind in the history of the country’s Labour sector. Liberia is noted for having some of the finest laws on the book, but the biggest issue surrounds implementation. We would like to appeal to policy makers in the labor sector to chart a honest course that will ensure a full implementation of the law so as to benefit workers across the lengths and breadths of Liberia void of engaging in deceit as it has been done with other good laws. We are also of the strongest conviction that the passage of the bill will largely bring big relief to workers in the country if stakeholders in the country’s Labour sector are sincere to implement the law. Again, we say bravo to our Honorable legislature for taking this huge step by adding value to workers in the country, but we beg your indulgence for full oversight to ensure that the law realizes its full objective. A hint to a wise is quiet sufficient.
