We are continuing our #VeteransDay pictures and stories with a couple of great shots of Brian Laakaniemi, one of TeamHealths Special Ops physicians based in California. In 1999, Dr. Laakaniemi was commissioned through the Health Professions Scholarship Program in the Navy prior to attending medical school. The Navy paid his full tuition at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and then he paid back those four years as a Flight Surgeon after doing a General Surgery Internship at the National Naval Medical Center during 2003 at the start of the war in Iraq. As a Flight Surgeon, Dr. Laakaniemi was stationed in Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory for a year, did two years with HMH-462 which is a Marine Corps CH-53E squadron out of Miramar, California and finished up as the base Flight Surgeon in Souda Bay, Greece. Dr. Laakaniemi says It was a great time of life and full of educational opportunities like the Military Tropical Medicine Course which was four weeks in Bethesda and then a two week humanitarian mission to Guyana in South America. Im lucky to be with TeamHealth now, which although its a civilian organization, also cares for its Physicians and Employees as much as the military does!! Thank you Dr. Laakaniemi for your service to our organization and our country. Semper Fi!!
