We are getting lots of questions about the virus causing severe respiratory illness among kids in the midwest, now spread to Kentucky. Here is what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have to say - cdc.gov/non-polio-enterovirus/about/EV-D68.html. EV-D68 can cause mild illness [runny nose and cough] or severe illness [wheezing, difficulty breathing]. There isnt any EV-D68-specific rapid diagnostic test, prevention or treatment. If your child isnt having breathing difficulties or otherwise looking terribly ill, there is no need to be seen just to be sure it isnt that virus. We recommend not having your child hang out with kids who are having fevers [from whatever cause] and encourage hand washing to prevent spread of all infectious diseases. Although EV-D68 has no vaccine, severe illness from influenza is preventable with a seasonal vaccine NOW available. Call with any questions.
