We cannot merit anything from God because to merit means to - TopicsExpress

We cannot merit anything from God because to merit means to satisfy two conditions: 1. moral perfection and 2. ontological equality. Adam had the first but not the latter before the entrance of sin and had neither post-lapse. Therefore Adam could not merit anything in the proper sense of the word. His merit was that of a covenantal sort whereby the Divine condescended to man through covenant to award for obedience. This obedience was already owed to God by the nature of the relationship between God and man and not established by covenant. Christ, however being the God-man, not only fulfilled the law perfectly in the flesh but was the Fathers equal in substance. Therefore, it is Christ alone who properly merits anything in regards to God.
