We celebrate the 10 year veteran outfielder and Gold Glove winner, Bobby Dernier. Dernier turns 58 today and was born in Kansas City Missouri. Played is high school sports for the Cardinals of Raytown South. He is drafted in 12th round by the Reds in 1977, but does not sign. Plays college baseball at Longview Community College and then signs with the Phillies in 1977. He is a September call-up by the Phillies in 1980. Has another cup of coffee with the Phillies of 10 games in 1981. He becomes the everyday centerfielder for the Phillies, with 42 steals in 1982. Plays in the NLCS and World Series with the Phillies in 1983. On March 26, 1984: Traded by the Philadelphia Phillies with Porfi Altamirano and Gary Matthews to the Chicago Cubs for Bill Campbell and Mike Diaz. Wins a Gold Glove with the Cubbies in 1984. Has a career high 45 steals with the Cubs and plays in NLCS with the Cubs in 1984. Plays for the Cubbies in 85 thru 87. Returns to the Phillies and finishes his career with the Phillies in 88 and 89.
