We had to put my dog to sleep on Saturday. He couldnt keep any food down and the vet kept him overnight, worried about a perforated gut, but in the morning he was worse and when they did an ultrasound they found out he had stomach cancer that wasnt treatable in a way that wouldnt prolong what had turned into a crashing system. It was a terrible choice to have to make, and Kate and I are pretty torn up over it. Ive been lucky I guess to not have to go through this before--Ive never even owned a dog before Buddy, so this particularly awful brand of hurt and absence and one-more-day thinking is hard to handle. I havent wanted to tell anyone because I dont like talking about it because I know theres about a 30-second fuse before I lose it and turn into a wet mess. Getting work done has been especially rough without my little studiomate asleep under my desk or on my lap. Buddy was just 8 years old. He was a real little dick to a lot of people when they first met him, but after about ten minutes hes following you around and sitting on your lap charming you. Ive fallen asleep many times on our couch because Id put my head on him all curled up in the corner and fall asleep with him as a pillow. Give your pets a hug for me. Meanwhile, Kates dog Alby is getting LOTS of extra love from both of us all of a sudden. Anyway. Ive put off saying anything because as it feels like something I want to keep private, but the few times Ive told people in person have been disasters of awkwardness, so... anyway. Hug your pets!
