We have some great news to share: This week Idaho scored an important step towards breaking our states dependence on dirty coal-fired electricity generation. On Monday, Idahos Public Utility Commission declined Idaho Powers request for guaranteed recovery of $130 million in retrofits to the Jim Bridger Coal plant, essentially telling the states largest utility that investing in coal is risky business. Because of the uncertain future of coal-fired generation, we find it unreasonable to prematurely commit ratepayer dollars to support Idaho Powers investment, the commission said. Rather than grant Idaho Powers request to put ratepayers on the hook for these investments, the PUC questioned whether coal will prove to be the best energy source to meet our states future electricity needs. This is incredible news and a perfect demonstration of how public involvement can make all the difference. The PUC listened to the Idaho Power customers who expressed serious concerns over Idaho Powers proposal. Thanks to the many volunteers who wrote letters, made phone calls and turned out for the public hearing. We couldnt have done this without your support and the help of our conservation allies. There is still much work to be done so stay tuned for next steps and opportunities to get involved. Onwards, James & Zack
