We often hear that weak muscles and muscles that dont turn on - TopicsExpress

We often hear that weak muscles and muscles that dont turn on efficiently are the cause of musculoskeletal issues (see the article i posted yesterday as an example). This presents the question why are the muscles weak & why would a muscle not turn on efficiently? Im not questioning that the muscles test weak when isolated and it is hard for the individual to turn on the muscle, the question is whether this is a cause or a symptom. The balance between range of movement and stability of the joints is really the key. When a joint is unstable due to stretch/deformation of the ligaments the body will stabilise the joint by contracting muscles surrounding the joint. It would make sense that the body would recruit the deeper muscle fibres first and recruit only the quantity that are needed to stabilise the joint. This would then create the situation that superficial fibres of a muscle would test weak as the deep fibres were already contracted. It would also make sense that the muscle would be neurologically challenged as part of the muscle is already on. From clinical experience working with the cohesion of the joints allows the muscles in spasm to release instantly without working directly on the muscles in question. So if you have been told you have weak muscles stop wasting time working the muscles and deal with the underlying cause - the instability of the joint.
