We received a copy of this fantastic poem from Roslyn at Withcott State School that she wrote to celebrate Book Week. Inspirational! The theme for Book Week 2014 is Connect to Reading. So how do we connect to books and words and stories? – We read, we immerse ourselves into a story, we imagine ourselves in the settings that are being described, and we allow the characters to become our friends. IN A STORY (Roslyn Stemmler) In a story I can find People there of every kind. Between the covers of a book They sit and wait until I look! They’re always there to touch my heart And show me how to make a start, To want to spread my wings and fly To ask a million questions why! I’ve met princes - rich as kings Stayed in castles- seen some things, Been a princess now and then, Flown upon a horse with wings. I’ve talked with fairies, chased off trolls Walked the yellow bricks of OZ, Helped outwit a wicked witch Pushed a baddie in a ditch. I’ve toured the world, and seen the plains Mountains, rivers, flooding rains Tramped through jungles, sailed the sea Explored the deserts, had a spree! I’ve travelled back to taste the past Learned to love the things that last, Met with Pharaohs on the Nile Seen the Mona Lisa smile! Jack Sparrow I can help you find The sailing ship that’s on your mind, Aladdin I will rub your lamp, Make a wish and be a scamp! Harry Potter, Peter Pan, Jasmine in a foreign land, Sleepy Beauty and Snow White They will be my friends tonight! When I snuggle into bed Pillows propped behind my head, I open up my favourite book And they are waiting, just you look! In a story WE can find People there of every kind.
