We watched All Is Lost. The film has only a few minutes of dialogue in total and only one actor. The good thing about a film that is produced by someone like Robert Redford is that you know that theyre not really doing it for the money. He did it because he was really enthusiastic about it. So that doesnt make it a great film, but it is sincere at least. The story is about a lone guy on his sail boat out in the Indian Ocean. The boat collides with a floating Asian shipping container that must have fallen off of a freighter. His radio gets damaged and soon he has to abandon the sinking boat and weather some storms in a big raft. He tries to engineer some ways to stay afloat and conserve drinking water, but if the passing freighters dont spot him, all is lost. I wondered if it was some kind of allegory about Chinese imports sinking the U.S. economy. I guess this film is only of interest to boaters, in the same way that Redfords A River Runs Through It is only of interest to fly fishermen. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone else.
