We were discussing what went wrong with our society in the UK and when this morning... My wifes late father was a coal miner, mine was a Surgeon...Diverse yes, but this is what makes our society tick.. Political correctness was one thing that came up, the Social services was another in days gone by it was a safety net - remember prior to 1948 there was nothing... It was a revelation when it came in .But the basic difference between then and now is simply then the working man had pride in doing a job and passing on his knowledge etc.. Now there is no pride, there are also no jobs for life either. When I said at the DHSS I had worked for 33 years in one company they hadnt a clue how to deal with me. One thing that shocked us both the other day was that we were attending a Model Railway exhibition in Carshalton. The layout opposite us was a small layout depicting a Tar Works... THe owner basically had a script to explain how this was managed in real life. The most staggering thing was that the majority of children had not got a clue as to what COAL was ... Basically the public are so wound up technology , that they have no idea where energy comes from. All they do is push switch and expect power to be there ... If things start to un-ravel here and we start getting power cuts etc , we feel that we may have to re-open the mines etc.. But saying that all the skill sets have been lost and we would probably end up with a bunch of Eastern europeans doing the mining as our youngsters wouldnt want to go down the pit....
