Weather Update Fort Kent Maine & Vicinity 7:20 AM EST | Sunday, 24 November ***Wind Advisory in effect from noon today to 9 am EST Monday*** Today’s Weather A mostly cloudy, cold, blustery day looks to be in store for Fort Kent as a strong low pressure NE of the region and an approaching Canadian high pressure create a steep pressure gradient as NW winds reaching 25-30 mph in the afternoon with gusts possibly reaching the 50-60 mph range. This has lead the National Weather Service to issue a High Wind Advisory from 12 PM EST through 9 AM EST Monday morning. Additionally, an upper trough circulating over the region aloft will induce some snow shower / snow squall activity with around an inch of snow possible by afternoon. High temperatures are only expected to reach the upper teens this afternoon (18°F)—though feeling much colder with low wind chill values—with overnight lows falling in the single digits—around 7°F with bitterly cold wind chills dipping below 0°F at times. Bundle up! Tomorrow’s Weather Monday, 25 November (only one month until Christmas!), should see decreasing winds and decreasing clouds by the afternoon period. Following frigid morning lows in the single digits, the high is only expected to reach the upper teens—topping out around 18°F in the afternoon. Clouds increase late Monday as a low pressure system moves eastward from the Great Lakes bringing a chance for some snow during the overnight period. Lows overnight dip to around 14°F with clouds helping to moderate temperatures somewhat along with light winds which shift to the south. Tuesday, 26 November 2013 Mostly cloudy skies are expected Tuesday, with highs reaching the upper 20s to near 30°F with chances for precipitation increasing in advance of the next system expected to affect the region Wednesday into Thursday. With clouds and southerly winds, the overnight low should only drop into the upper teens for most locations around the Fort Kent area. Midweek Snow? Model runs continue to show a wide range of potential tracks with a bundle of energy moving from the California coast, across the southern tier of states, then northwards along the East Coast as the week progresses. Presently, it appears that there will be a low pressure moving up the Eastern seaboard, which may bring some wintery precipitation to the region. If it tracks further out in the Atlantic, then its impact will be less (or it may have none at all), but if it follows a central Gulf of Maine course or a track up the Downeast shoreline, then a significant storm could be in store. If the low travels further inland, that would bring a mixed bag for the state with regards to precipitation. As always, track and timing are key with a potential storm like the one being monitored, so this situation will bear monitoring in upcoming model runs (and hopefully some consensus will emerge shortly!). The nature and magnitude of any precipitation will be governed by eventual track of this system, so anyone planning to travel for Thanksgiving should monitor the weather situation carefully, as there is some chance that this system could become a significant midweek snowstorm. _____________________________________________ Fort Kent Climatological Data Yesterdays High Temperature in Fort Kent 33°F / 1°C recorded at 6:33 AM EST Yesterdays Low Temperature in Fort Kent 19°F / -7°C recorded at 11:57 PM EST Fort Kent Precipitation Last 24 hours: 0.00 in | Month: 1.09 in | Year: 26.63 in _____________________________________________ Fort Kent Sun and Moon Times Today (US Naval Observatory) SUN Begin civil twilight 6:17 a.m. Sunrise 6:52 a.m. Sun transit 11:21 a.m. Sunset 3:50 p.m. End civil twilight 4:25 p.m. MOON Moonrise 9:26 p.m. on preceding day Moon transit 4:30 a.m. Moonset 11:26 a.m. Moonrise 10:26 p.m. Moonset 11:52 a.m. on following day Phase of the Moon on 24 November: waning gibbous with 61% of the Moons visible disk illuminated.
