Wed night- so I guess its been a couple days since the last Andy - TopicsExpress

Wed night- so I guess its been a couple days since the last Andy update? Andy has been working hard since coming home and doing therapy as outpatient, and he is continuing to improve. We have been fine tuning the schedule as needed to give Andy the best treatment we can give him. He is currently going to Sunnyview 3 days a week for PT, OT and speech. We got the times extended some to give him a little extra time there. They have been great as far as working with us to keep the therapy times all blocked together and also scheduling any dr appointments on the same day so we dont have to make extra trips. We also enrolled Andy with a personal trainer/rehab specialist at Top Form training center in East Greenbush. He goes there 3 days a week in addition to Sunnyview, and it seems to be helping a lot. Both places are determined to get him back to 100% ASAP! As far as PT/OT, he has gotten to the stage where the improvements arent as fast but def still there. Between the two places, he is getting quite a work out and it is showing. His right arm and leg still give him some trouble, but are getting better all time. In the past week or so, he has been able to pull both legs up into bed himself and has been able to stand up from the wheelchair by himself with very little or even no help. He is now working on standing balance and continuing with assisted walking. Its just going to take time, patience and hard work. OT has him working on his upper body as well as trunk strength and various exersizes to help him get through the day He had a Botox treatment on his right arm this week to relieve some of the toning/stiffness so it can be retrained easier. Although he has still been getting better with control of it. In speech, we have all been learning a lot about how different sounds are made. Andy has been doing very well in relearning how to make the different sounds and the more he does it, the more we are able to hear his real voice again. He can pretty much repeat any word but just, sometimes hard time initiating them. But that too, gets a little better every day. He has also started with having a tutor come to the house 2 (to now 3) days a week. He is very determined to get back to physically going to school (never thought we would hear him say THAT!!) He has been able to keep weaning off many of the meds he was on, and only down to a couple now. He went back to Syracuse for a follow up with the neurosurgeon and a ct scan. They said everything is healing fine and he will not need any more surgery or anything from them. Just time and therapy...time and therapy. Baby steps.....baby steps. Even though every case is different and there is no way to determine how long the recovery will take, they were very impressed with how far along his is in such a short time. Words cannot begin to describe how difficult this situation is on all of us. Its physically demanding, mentally draining and an extreme emotional roller coaster, but somehow our little team keeps pluggin away like we always have....together. We are determined to win this championship battle! All in all, he is really continuing to do very well and we greatly appreciate all the thoughts and prayers from everyone. They are definately still helping!!
