Wednesday, the 2nd day of April. My friend invites me over to his place in Asokoro. A two-bedroom joint, tastefully furnished and all. I do not know why I ask, but I ask all the same - mouth diaorrhea things: how much did you rent the place for? My buddy smiles and calmly tells me he paid N3.5m to rent the place for a year. I grow balder in shock - dark people like me dont blanch nah - then recover some hairs as I regain my composure. My friend smiles and changes the subject. Oh, Abuja. Abuja is really an expensive place to live in. They tell me New York, London and Tokyo are much worse when it comes to property and overall cost of living. Maybe they are right. But before I begin to ruminate over the matter of Abuja and its house-rent wahala, my buddy brings out a bottle of chilled champagne - champagne o, not champain from Aba - solely for my gastronomic pleasure. I pop the bottle and settle down to drinking the wine and chopping some peppered snails set beside the wine bottle - solely for my enjoyment. Why drink Panadol on top of somebody elses headache? Some people can afford rent like that. Way of the world. Oh, the peppered snails taste like stolen paradise no be small. I show no pity. I devour every morsel. Selah. *belches and farts out loud - no worry; di tin no dey smell* La Fin.
