“Weighting professionalism and Trade Unionism equally, is key for SAMA”-Minister Pandor calls for a landslide victory in the coming 2014 elections Norman Mampane, COSATU Communications Officer, 30 August 2013 South Africa Medical Association 1st Elective Trade Union Congress was addressed by the Minister of Home Affairs and also as the Chairperson of the ANC Health and Education Committee. She congratulated doctors for realizing that they are workers from our communities and engaging on their issues, is critical to build social cohesion in South Africa. The ANC Leadership in general and in particular the Secretary-General or the President had wished to come and address doctors in South Africa, however, the Congress coincided with the convened Alliance Economic Summit’, said Minister Naledi Pandor. SAMA must weight professionalism and trade unionism on the same scale so that the health sector may continue to nurture caring leaders in all institutions in particular and society at large. ‘Whilst plans are at an advanced stage for building of two universities in Northern Cape and Mpumalanga, we will be unbundling MEDUNSA from the University of Limpopo, to generate a dedication nurturing and training of doctors, with an emphasis on post-graduate studies’, said Pandor ‘Fighting the pandemic of HIV/AIDS prevalent in the country, demand that doctors must play their active roles in preventative campaigns across all institutions’. SAMA therefore is called ‘to continue with other health professionals to reduce further infant mortality and cases of TB Prevalence, including malaria’. ‘Government will continue to encourage researching in the health sector and young doctors, are encouraged to step up the ladder and be counted’. Lastly, Pandor has called for a ‘massive campaigning for the ANC in the coming 2014 national elections’.
