Welcome to Wednesday everyone. Lots of people ask me to explain the difference between Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Physiotherapy. This week I will focus on Chiropractic. OK here goes. Chiropractic: focuses on the return to normal nerve function in order to restore pure potential to the body ( yes i borrowed that from Mr. Deepak Chopra, but only because i like it). Pure potential in the body is the bodys ability to function at its optimum and most efficient state. I know this sounds a little ethereal. But what it means is that the body doesnt work inefficiently in performing movement or posture and therefore avoids fatigue and dysfunction, injury and pain This may be achieved through manipulation, mobilization, massage, stretching, dietary advice, exercise rehab, acupuncture and many other techniques. It is not true that all Chiropractors manipulate your spine. It is true that they are the best trained at doing it though. The principle behind a manipulation is to affect a change in movement and possibly assist in over riding pain presentation. The crack sound does nothing. It is merely a change in the pressure within the joint causing a release. An adjustment cant change any underlying physical change that may be presenting such as a disc prolapse or arthritis. The adjustment, whether in the spine or periphery, aids in the return of normal movement and function. It is then appropriate to hold this new position via strengthening and holding/re training via rehab exercises and therefore encourage normal efficient function. Form influences function. and... visa versa. Chiropractors in Australia are trained with a double degree at university level with the undergraduate degree being a science degree in Anatomy and Physiology and the post Grad degree being a Master of Chiropractic. The post grad degree teaches clinical skills and the application of the knowledge they gained from the undergraduate program. They are trained primary health care providers with the skill to diagnose muscular skeletal ailments and deal with them accordingly. That is, treat it, or refer to another health care professional if it is not appropriate for them to do so. Chiropractors, in short, are muscular skeletal experts. They are sometimes maligned by the orthodox medical profession because of out there claims in helping to treat some complex presentations such as ADD, and other behavioral complaints, allergies and on occasions their stance on vaccination. Personally, I am not in the profession to stand in judgement of others. what seems completely bonkers to one person is justifiable to the next. I do believe that one professional in no way represents the profession. Just like a bad GP or dental experience doesnt diminish the necessity to access these professionals when appropriate. Good practitioners will focus on the well being of the patient and not play medical politics, attempting to denigrate the other in order to elevate their own. I hope this helps. Any thoughts??? Comments welcome...
