Well, I,m not a big fan of country music past the late seventies or early eighties but every now and then Ill turn the dial to one of the local stations if just for a little back ground noise. This morning I am really trying to be moved by the songs they are playing and to be fair , theyre not all terrible. However, I think I know whats missing. It is possible that the issue has more to do with my geography and age than the artists talent or sincerity etc. Even when they play the occasional Haggard or Watson, the songs fall short unless they are announced by a Hopi Indian disk jockey through a week AM signal coming off the reservation at three in the morning. One of those late night shows comes to mind. It was the first time the radio show had played Haggards Are the good times really over. The Jockey announced the song as the latest from Merle and after the song ended, she said wow lets hear that one again!. She played it again and it was played numerous times into the day. She was really moved by that song as was myself and I am sure many of those awake listening to her show. I could only imagine legal issues for a modern high powered station that took such an informal program format. Here in Nevada we have some good old country stations but they will never compare to that hopi radio show off the reservation.
