Well, I sure havent been out hunting much this year due to this stupid back injury. Its depressing for me, because I love the outdoors so dang much, but thanks to my friend Wilf, I was able to make it out a few times so far. Last night Wilf and I went out. I sat in the corner blind and Wilf sat in the fallen tree blind on the other side of the field. I knew the rut had kicked in a few days back, but unable to get out. I laid a scent trail from 3 different trails that cross the creek into our field, and out into the field to my POAL scent dispenser that I had on the end of an old broken arrow at 20 yrds from where I sat. About 1/2 hour before dark and last shooting light I see some deer coming out on the 4th trail down from me...LOL...figures eh. There was one big ol doe and 6 what looked like last years (yearling) does, and behind them a nice buck. Well for almost that whole last 20 minutes that buck chased every one of those young does out further into the field, back and forth, picking a new one each time. The closest they came to me was 45 yards, and I didnt want to take a chance, since that buck would stop for a few seconds, only to take off after another doe. Well, they got almost all the way across the field, and I figured that show was over, so I focused my attention toward the creek again. Then out come a lone doe, from the creek on one of my scent trails. Shes just standing there, at the edge of the field, sniffing things out, and that buck from way over on the other side of the field, comes bombing over to check her out too :D Well, he didnt find her too interesting, but did find my scent trail very interesting, and followed it right over to me. I was having a tough time in the low light trying to find my pins, because my pin light stopped working. Well, using both eyes, and switching back and forth from one eye to two eyes, I finally made the shot, at 10 yrds. Yep, thats right....10 yrds...LOL :D He was quartering just a tad toward me. And what a THWACK that was. Wilf said he heard it clear across the field :D The buck ran over toward the creek edge and stopped beside that other doe. They stood there for a few minutes, until I saw the doe cross the field, and left him standing there. Well, by now its getting pretty dang dark, and I cant make out much anymore, but I was hoping he dropped right there somewhere. after waiting a few minutes, I slowly and quietly packed up my gear, and walked out of my blind. My arrow was laying just on the other side of where he was standing, but I didnt like the looks of it. Looked like a bit of gut, and blood on there. I walked over to where I hoped he went down, but nothing. Wilf came over to help me look around, but we found nothing, so I said, lets pack it in, and come back first thing in the morning. Well, I decided to bring Polly with me in the morning, and I was just going to call Wilf when I found it. I went straight to where I last seen him, and into a trail there, that crosses the creek. Theres Polly with her nose to the ground sniffing something, so I look, and theres a nice pool of blood :D Thanks Polly :D So now at least I know he crossed the creek. So Polly and I cut around to find an easier spot to cross, cut back, to where I figured he came out on the other side, but the trail there split into 3. Well Polly was already following one trail so I figured, why not trust my dog :D. It was only 20 yrds to the bush-line from there, and in we went. walked into the bush about 10 yrds, and Polly wasnt sure which trail to take. No blood either so far. Well, I just stood there for a minute and scanned all around the area. Looked back towards where we came in, and theres my buck laying there, about 15 yards off to the side of the trail. :D In all toll, it took us 20 minutes to find my deer :D and it was on the way back out to the car too, to top it off Thank you Lord. Im very happy for this nice buck, especially the way things have been going this year.
