Well, I wasnt going to post but I realized its nothing to be ashamed of , and we certainly are not ashamed of Stanley. Yesterday , he received his diagnosis . He does, in fact, have autism. We are mixed emotions, but overall happy we have a name for it. Stanley is still and will always be the charming, bright, mannerly and respectful little boy he was before his diagnosis and not just the little boy with autism. Autism is only one aspect of his total character . It does not define him as a person. As a child , he is still unfolding. Niether us or he knows what he is capable of. Defining him by one characteristic runs the danger of setting up an expectation that may be too low. If he senses that we all think he cant do it his natural response will be why try ? So when talking about Stanley , hes not the little boy with autism , he is Stanley , the little charmer and comedian.
