Well, Rachel Ford and I made it to Paris. Our apartment is a wonderful dump, as anything affordable in the center of Paris would be. It was last remodeled in about 1920 (literally) with just patchwork fixes since then. No AC, so I’m praying there isn’t a heat wave. No shower curtain around the old claw-footed iron tub--why wouldnt you put up a shower curtain when everyone showers? But the ceilings are 16 feet tall and the people we are staying with are very nice. And the internet is good and it is a 10 minute walk from anywhere, in the middle of a massive complex of cafés and museums. We passed by hundreds of cafes in the quarter mile from our apartment to the Seine yesterday, all filled with people talking intently. Parisian women are all amazingly beautiful and fashionable and Rachel is already starting to gravitate to the boutiques. We’ll honor the 4th by visiting Lafayette’s grave and watching France play Germany in the World Cup. Then we have to find Rachel rollerblades—apparently all the hip teenagers in town rollerblade around the Eiffel Tower on Friday nights. Awesome.
