Well, its all over. Im waiting at Nelson Airport to return home to Auckland. My thoughts on the tangi for Deana. My neice Lisa Totoro and her hubby Joe are brilliant, resilient, resourceful people, with a huge support network. While never forgetting the tragedy of the occasion, we were all made to feel welcome, and a support for their burden and not additional burdens to bare. It was good to see all my 5 siblings together for the first time in years. It was good to spend 3 days on the marae and bare witness to true grief, and the beginning of healing. Many people were exposed to this ancient form of grief management for the first time (while others I spoke with lamented the loss of the equally ancient Celtic wake ceremony). More than one person commented to me that the modern method of hushing up death as quickly as possible (resulting in years of therapy for unresolved grief) is a far inferior system.
