Well said: Lifeline operates without tax money. Telephone customers, not the telecom industry, finance discounted service. On your telephone bill you will see a line item surcharge for Universal Service Fund. The telephone company wants you to think it is a federal tax. In truth, it is a scheme to use a separate surcharge as a means to directly pass the company’s USF Lifeline obligation to the customer outside of the normal rates. The customers subsidize the approximate 2,000 telecom companies that offer Lifeline by reimbursing the lost revenues from the discounted rates for eligible customers. stltoday/news/opinion/mailbag/letters-to-the-editor/continue-lifeline-program-providing-phone-service-to-low-income-families/article_b5641ffd-1cd9-537b-aba3-35b7f6230845.html
