Went to lunch with my grandkids the other day and made an interesting observation. A number of kids brought lunches from home, the other kids were all given a lunch that consisted of green peas, pizza, chocolate milk, a muffin/cookie thing, and a slice of watermelon or fruit. These were kids from 1st grade to 5th I believe. This is purely a casual observance, but as they finished, I watched what was being ate: School lunch kids More than half did not touch the pizza. More than half did not eat the green peas About 25% did not finish their milk About half of them ate the fruit. Home lunch kids: Most all of the kids finished most of what they had brought. There was a wide variety in what was eaten no PBJ because of peanut allergies at the school. This school was not under the Michelles Doctrine of Bad Food,(MDBF) but, as we know, her dietary garbage is more odious than normal school lunches. In my mind I would have to say that the kids who brought their lunches, had a better lunch and got more nutrition than those who ate school lunch simply because they actually ate something. There was probably a 40% waste factor to the school lunch food. Summary: Giving kids nutritional food (MDBF) that they will not eat does absolutely nothing to enhance their health and a less nutritional, home lunch (by MDBF standards) is better for the kids from the simple point that they eat it!!
