Were often asked: What script should I write to submit to the Academy Nicholl competition? We actually think the question should be: What script should I write? Or: What script should I write next? New (and even more experienced) writers should not allow a competition and its criteria and past results to determine their writing choices. Instead they should be focused on questions such as the following: What story do I want to tell? What story can I tell? What movie would I want to see? What story would be cool? What characters, subject matter and arena do I know well? What story and characters matter to me? What story affects me emotionally? What story makes me feel? What genre(s) do I love? What genre(s) am I comfortable writing? What story/subject matter/arena can I research so that I know it inside out? Finally, to repeat myself from nearly two decades ago: Theres a Graham Parker song titled Passion Is No Ordinary Word. Passion is what writers need to find in their characters and stories. If you can instill your passion into a script, perhaps readers will discover that passion. Making an audience feel on any and every level is what creating a screenplay is finally all about.
