West Mesquite Students Awarded Balch Springs Study Scholarships As one of the 12 communities of the Best Southwest Partnership, it was Mayor Carrie Gordon’s duty to select a student scholar from the City of Balch Springs to honor at the Second Annual City Scholarship Awards Luncheon. Based on his academic transcript and performance, college entrance exam scores and personal essay submission, Michael Jaramillo, a graduating senior of West Mesquite High School, became the recipient of a $500 scholarship award. “My goal is to obtain a master’s degree in the ever-changing field of engineering” and to “work in a profession that requires the application of mechanical engineering concepts. I want to help make people’s lives better,” says Jaramillo. Pamela Shaw, Jaramillo’s teacher, says she is impressed by him. “As an educator and someone who has seen Michael grow, mature and work these past three years to achieve his dream of attending college, it thrills me to see him experiencesuccess and prepare for the bright future that awaits him after high school. Throughout his high school career, Michael has continued to impress me and stood out among his peers.” Balch Springs Executive Director of the Economic Development Corporation John Hubbard also spoke highly of Jaramillo. “He is an example on how hard work and perseverance results in success. Balch Springs is proud that Michael is the recipient of the 2014 BSW Scholarship.” Jaramillo will be attending Texas A&M University in the fall. Mayor Gordon also awarded 10 deserving high school students with scholarships during the June Balch Springs city council meeting through her Mayor’s Scholarship Challenge Program founded in 2012. The students who received the scholarships were Michael Jaramillo, Cecillia Torres, Aily Perez, Jennifer Rodriguez, Javier Lopez, Uche Ukadike, Kametria Clayton and Paulina Cruz of West Mesquite High School all residents of Balch Springs. The Mayor’s Scholarship Challenge is funded through private donations and given to students who show academicexcellence, civic commitment and maturity, leadership skills and a firm acceptance to a college or university.
