Westford’s ‘Team Sebastian’ grateful for community’s help as they make final push to attend rare-disease conference in Colorado - The McCarthys say they’ve learned the true meaning of generosity. In the face of hardship, with mounting bills and a child suffering from a rare disease, the family remains optimistic because of the people working to help them. Restaurants have put out jars for donations. Neighbors have come together to sell T-shirts. A stranger at the airport wrote a $250 check on the spot when he heard the story about the sickly 3-year-old boy named Sebastian. “Even though we’ve been through a lot, especially in the last few months, and we’ve had a lot of health concerns for him, we feel so blessed with all of the support from everybody,” said Melissa R. McCarthy, one of Sebastian’s parents. McCarthy and her spouse, Melissa J. McCarthy, have been working for years to handle their son’s complex medical needs. Together, with their other son Lyric, 4, the family calls themselves “Team Sebastian.” Sebastian has chILD, short for Children’s Interstitial and Diffuse Lung Disease. His condition is life-threatening and complete respiratory failure is always a concern. His condition is of an unknown origin, and he also falls on the autism spectrum while suffering from epilepsy. Sebastian lives with a 24-7 oxygen supply to survive. The McCarthys, both 30-year-old Dracut natives, moved to Westford and now work every day to keep their boy alive.
