Weve gotten a couple new likes and I wanted to give a quick update - There will be a public hearing on September 23rd at 7pm at Muskego City hall. This is to get public input on a lot of issues that need to be settled before (if?) a new ordinance is written to allow fowl on smaller lots. PLEASE ATTEND THIS HEARING AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT! Even if you dont want to speak, just having strength in numbers is HUGE! The alderman have quite a few concerns about allowing chickens and the more people we have voicing their support and/or experience with the benefits of keeping backyard chickens, the better! Please email me here if you have any questions or need any more information. A couple of the issues that need to be brought up: number of chickens allowed (alderman are currently leaning towards 4), whether or not roosters are allowed, distance from lot lines, if a permit is required, etc. The alderman seem to misinformed about a number of things - we need to let them know that chickens are NOT noisy (if no rooster) and NOT smelly (if coop kept clean - like any other pet!). There was some talk of requiring neighbor approval which we find unreasonable. You dont need neighbor approval to get dogs or rabbits, put up sheds or dog kennels, plant trees or gardens - why would you need a neighbors approval to keep a couple small, quiet chickens in a coop? Please make every effort to attend this hearing - this is the big one! Bring all your great chicken keeping stories - how beneficial they are for your children, how they consume yard and kitchen waste keeping it out of landfills, how they create beneficial fertilizer, how they provide your family with fresh healthy eggs, how they eat the mosquitoes and ticks in your yard - lets convince these aldermen!
