What Are Newborn Bats Like? newborn bat Baby bats, referred to as ‘pups’, are quite fascinating creatures. Bats typically give birth to one pup at a time, but sometimes give birth to two, three or even four in a litter. The size of a newborn bat is usually 10-30% of the mother’s body weight, which is rather large if you can imagine it! Like many mammals, when bats are first born, they are born without teeth or fur. The skin is nearly translucent and human caretakers can often see the contents of a pup’s stomach. They are also born blind, however, contrary to popular belief; they do not spend the entirety of their lives that way. Some newborns cling to their mother while she forages for food, while others simply wait in the roost. Bat pups are typically nursed until they are nearly full grown, once the wings are developed. They usually begin flying after about one month, and become independent anywhere from 6 weeks to 4 months, depending on the species of bat.
