What Inclusion Is Today. Prior to the events of Fleming County - TopicsExpress

What Inclusion Is Today. Prior to the events of Fleming County Homecoming, I would like the world to know how appreciative and thankful I am on behalf of Heidi. Over the years, I have advocated for all children with special needs to be treated with dignity, respect, and to be included. The students of Fleming County High School have undoubtedly done this for Heidi and her best friend Natalie by voting them to be a part of homecoming. I cannot be more happy and proud; not only of Heidi, but more so of the normal developing peers who chose to make the girls part of their royalty. I shout out to you as this is a major accomplishment, not only persons who are different, but for the entire community. It has been said that a parent with a special needs child can continuously grieve the loss of the normal child because they dont get to experience what other children do. This has not been the case for me this week. There have been many students who have assisted in making this week special for Heidi and I will always be grateful to them: Amber Meadows, Tyler Lemmons, and Kegan Dales, along with the special staff and Mrs. Fritz. Thank you for this experience; to show what inclusion looks like today. In a couple of weeks, Heidi will be 18. She was a very sick baby that was never to live beyond a few days, became the girl to defy all the odds, who is now ready to celebrate her senior year on her high school homecoming court. The girl who was never to laugh, talk, sing, or breathe will be doing them all along with her friends and peers at Fleming County High.
