What? Its almost 2015 already?!! What happened to 2014? The year began on several rough notes- first, we lost Jans father Mitch in early January, followed by my younger brother Davids grandaughter being murdered in a case where theres been arrests made, but still no trial. Things improved gradually, and we were blessed to be able to do a little traveling. In July, we were able to visit some friends out in San Francisco, and to experience the natural wonder of Yosemite. The Menchville High Class of 1975 (early) 40th reunion was Nov 1st and was an event to be remembered for a long time. A lot of old friends that hadnt seen each other since graduation, as well as a lot of Facebook friends, came together in a well planned event that was way too short. Debbie Arnett McGinnis, Patty Johnson Clark, and everyone else who helped pull this together did a helluva job. We were also blessed to see a number of concerts this year: Renaissance, Nickel Creek (2x), guitarists Alex DeGrassi and Andrew York, Rodney Crowell, The Dave Matthews Band doing a split acoustic/electric show, Sarah McLachlan, Heart, James Taylor, Bruce Hornsby with the Pat Metheny Unity Group, Josh Ritter, Blackberry Smoke, Govt Mule, Albert Lee with Cindy Cashdollar, Lyle Lovett & His Large Band, Chris Botti, Will Kimbrough with Amy Black, The Secret Sisters, an excellent new band Atlas Gray, Michael Franks, Jason Mraz and Raining Jane, and, finally, violin virtuoso Mark OConnors An Appalachian Christmas. We also made it down to the Yorktown Pub to see our friends The Delvers play their wonderful mixture of songs. Unemployment here in Hampton Roads has fallen to 5%, the stock market is up substantially (go GE stock go!!), and a gallon of gas is down to a little over $2-so, at least some of the economic news is promising. While unfortunately, Miss Jan has spent over a week and a half fighting a nasty flu mixed with an absolutely brutal sounding cough that she caught from her little darling preschool students, we are cautiously optimistic about 2015. There are rumors of another grandchild and there may be a light at the end of the disability insurance/Social Security/Medicare cluster f**k tunnel. Well see. Hope all of you have a safe and Happy New Year with good things to come in 2015.
