What a long day. We met with Ashtons psychiatrist today and I wish - TopicsExpress

What a long day. We met with Ashtons psychiatrist today and I wish care would have been coordinated differently. The appointment was made weeks ago because we are starting him on a stimulant medication for ADHD. I knew he needed an EKG, so I was hoping shed give me the order and I could have the interpretation in hand for our appointment. Nope. We arrive, she confirms we want to start medications, and then I get an order for an EKG. So now we have to get that done and then meet with her in 2 weeks for the prescriptions. She gave us a lot of handouts on the various medications and side effects and shes asking me to choose which one I want Ashton to be on. She said that sometimes children (especially Ashtons age) will do really well with stimulants and he might be able to sleep better because his mind will allow his body to relax. If not, we are also getting a prescription for Catapres. This medication was first used for high blood pressure, but can also be used in anxiety and for children with sleep problems. These medications will help Ashton with the hyperactivity, but not with the defiance. We will be starting weekly visits with a PhD candidate in child behavioral psychology to learn how to deal with his defiance in a therapeutic manner. I wont lie, I was really overwhelmed today and cried a few times. Deciding to put him on medications is a big step for all of us. We tried our best to try non-pharmacological methods, but they didnt help. There are risks with these medications, but we are all hopeful that the benefits will be greater than those risks.
