What a lovely night we had yesterday! Thanks to all who came for your wonderful company, including newbies Jolanta & Mel! We began with discussing the novel for this month - Rebecca, by Daphne Du Maurier. I, personally, havent read a book with such an intense & engrossing storyline in a very long time. I was spellbound by Du Mauriers writing, and her masterful way of creating tension & suspense, not to mention the unforgettable characters she had created for this novel and her ability to blur literary boundaries and break with convention. I believe that Rebecca was unanimously liked by the group, and I think the powerful character development/complexities and ongoing themes Du Maurier crafted had a huge part to play in our enjoyment of the novel. There were may questions posed in the book Puzzles, curiosities & conundrums in modern fiction - (thanks Elizabeth!) through its chapter focusing on Rebecca. This gave us an even broader scope of interpretation from the novel, which we hadnt even considered before! (Also - more than one of us noted that wed found comparisons with Jane Eyre in the book). We then watched the 1997 TV adaptation, which, I think we all agreed, has rather unfortunate casting! BUT I loved being able to watch this afterwards, regardless of how many holes we picked at it, because it really helped me to question my ideas & interpretations of key events & character traits in the novel.
