What a nifty, little creature! Now heres a fun fact: The male platypus has a spur on one back leg capable of injecting poison (and a nasty poison it is). Its believed that this is a weapon to use against other males during mating season. The platypus is nearly unique in the mammal world as an animal that is poisonous. Another poisonous mammal is the slow loris (an endangered species). The slow loris has poison glands near its wrists that it licks when threatened, making its bite poisonous. Because the slow loris is so very cute they are coveted as pets and mankind, in its phenomenal lack of wisdom, intelligence, and empathy, rips out the little animals teeth to sell on the black market.
