What a story for our new boy Arthur!!! With the Assistance of BTR of SW FL and BTCA, our rescue was able to pull 10 yr old Spike (changed to Arthur) from a shelter in Tampa, Florida. The more we learn about Arthur, the happier we are that he is safe and sound in the care of his loving foster home in Virginia. The following information was discovered during Arthur’s visit at the vet on Monday, November 3rd: 1) Arthur’s dental needs are immediate and extensive. It is believed that his teeth were filed down to gum level to be used as a bait dog which exposed the soft dentin causing advanced decay. Some of his current teeth are so abscessed that the abscesses have ruptured in his mouth and other teeth are abscessed. Some of his jaw bone may be exposed due to the severity of the burst abscesses and receding gum tissue. The estimate for the dental work ranges from $1,500.00 - $2,000.00. No one can imagine the pain that Arthur is currently experiencing and we are hopeful the dental work will be performed in short order. 2) Arthur’s right front elbow was previously broken and not cared for. This is causing some arthritis in that spot now but can be assisted with Glucosamine/Chondroitin. 3) Arthur has a tremendous yeast infection in both ears, which is now being treated with EasOtic. 4) Arthur has dry eye, which is being treated and will needed to be treated going forward with Sandoz and Cyclosporine. He also has a bit of a dark tinted cornea, which is limiting his peripheral vision but is not impacting his front sight at all; and 5) Arthur has a nervous tummy and is on Metronidazole to tighten up his stool and help him feel better. He is being fed Royal Canine HP that is great for skin and easy to digest for dogs with allergies and tummy issues. Even with all his medical needs Arthur’s foster moms cannot say enough about how sweet a boy he is. He loves to play fetch and will run after his Katie’s Bumper Fire Hose Frisbee and put it in your lap. He doesnt try to snap or grab...he is just happy to play. He loves his Nylabone Galileo toy and will keep himself busy when it is time to settle down. He walks well on a leash and doesn’t try to pull or go after things. He will bump your leg to “check in” and make sure things are good. His foster moms have been re-enforcing his good behavior with click and treat. He does not seem bothered by other dogs or cats, however, his foster moms continue to maintain positive control with a short leash and constant feedback for good behavior. Arthur is very well behaved in his crate and is happy to sleep there and have a quiet moment while the family is watching tv. He also rides really well in the car. He sits down immediately and will occasionally do a “Bullie moo” to let you know he is there. He has a good appetite and eats all of his food and he takes treats very gently. Overall, he is a real joy and will make a wonderful pet. He is a gentle buddy that knows his bad days are behind him and once he is feeling better, we believe he will be amazing.
