What a weekend. Traveled to Canberra on friday so Robyn could play and I could Umpire a the comp at Hawker Fields over the long weekend. Wet and filthy weather turned out gorgeous on saturday, not a drop of rain fell and the fields were dry - and criss crossed with burnt in markings from soccer fields that actually intersected the Softball Foul Ball markings! Confusion reigned for a little but over came. 4 plates and two bases saturday, tired by the end but pulled up ok. On sunday morning I was given permission (and the first two time slots off) to visit Nerd-con...I mean Cancon. Ran into so many of the old crew that hadnt been there for a while. I didnt wanna go :( But back to the fields I went. 2 Plates and three bases later I was tired as. Not to mention being used as a human Pinata by ACT U15s Girls Pitcher! OUCH! Destroyed a steak and chips and watched Australia win the one day match through bleary eyes. Monday and last day. Finals and the usual chaos that finals bring. 2 Plates and 2 Bases. I went through the whole weekend and got more bruises in the final game than in the whole weekend. I dont remember if it were the Folkards or the Western Warriors but by the Gods they both peppered me. I spent 2 games with a gentleman by the name of Dick on saturday that did more for me in umpiring in 2 games ..... I cant remember his last name but his advice was great, helpful and delivered in a fashion that didnt make me feel like a complete idiot and has restored my hope that I am not a complete failure and waste of time as an Umpire.. Sir - I thank you. In short I really enjoyed this tournament - from the C3 to the gentleman that manned the BBQ and kept the Umpires fed, watered and amused. I think that if my daughter plays again next year I will not be reluctant to go :) Thank you all :)
