What are some prevalent Hmong attitudes we need to - TopicsExpress

What are some prevalent Hmong attitudes we need to change? Heres one that REALLY bothers me. This idea that following the rules are more important than the people its meant to help. Case in point: My cousins wife was messing around so he called his FIL (father-in-law) for help. The FIL told him he had to go get some elders to call back, otherwise the infidelity never happened. My cousin said his wife admitted to cheating, but his parents were no longer living and his uncles didnt care about him. So he had no one to call back. Honestly, my cousin did not follow traditional rules, but just needed his FIL and their relatives to help talk to their daughter. In the end, no one did or said anything and my cousin and his wife divorced quietly. But lately, her side of the family has been going around telling everyone that its his fault, since he did not have representation. That despite what he claims, she was innocent since his side had nothing to say. Basically telling people his failure to produce an elder caused the divorce. I find this ridiculous. When the purpose of rules are to enforce themselves and not help people, then what good are they? How about when we call you for help, just help us as a friend, a relative and a person. Forget the stupid rules when they dont apply.
