What are your thoughts on religious school events at public schools, such as winter/holiday concerts where the majority of songs are pro-Christianity with explicit messages about heaven and a newborn king? Ill add that at a concert I attended tonight to see a relative perform, it was a 7th grade chorus (Im guessing) class performing at an elementary school; and students were not only graded for it, but any absent students would receive a 0 that would count twice. This seems pretty unconstitutional to me. Thoughts? Not surprisingly, there was no reference of other religious traditions such as Hanukkah or Kwanza. Before starting, the teacher said that there would be a variety of songs including spiritual songs. Its a heavily conservative area in the bible belt with possibly multiple southern Baptist churches on any given street. Im thinking about e-mailing the teacher anonymously for potentially punishing students for not wishing to take part in a heavily religious concert that Im assuming (but dont know for sure) that all students are required to participate in. Even if all students are believers, this shouldnt be assumed or required regardless in my opinion.
