What could be more fun that working Recalls on a beautiful Fall day by the water? Teaching this young boy to Come ASAP. The first time we call! I expect a dog to turn and begin to come before the verbal command is out of my mouth! To get that quick response it is my job to teach the dog how to respond quickly. Come and Front Sit. If we teach a Finish. That is great - but Come and Front Sit. We do not repeat commands, we work with a long line for 4-6 weeks, changing locations and distractions. If our beloved pet does not turn and begin to head towards us. the minute we say Come - then we must quickly pop the leash and bring the dog in as we say Hurry! If the dog des not Come quickly and we call over and over again, we have now taught our dog not to be safe! They learn they do not have to respond to our requests. Teach well but think what you are teaching your dog! Today was a fun day to work and teach fun and safety at the same time!
