What does Jane Austen have to do with the War of 1812? Plenty, - TopicsExpress

What does Jane Austen have to do with the War of 1812? Plenty, dear reader. Austens England was constantly at war during her lifetime: the American war for Independence, the Napoleonic Wars, and the War of 1812 (with the French Revolution thrown in for good measure). That explains all those dashing officers in her novels---and perhaps a shortage of eligible bachelors. Recently one of Jean Lafittes rangers put on his red coat for a visit to the Jane Austen Literary Festival in Mandeville. His topic for both a talk and some hands-on fun was the eras pastimes for civilians and soldiers alike: quoits, whist, and shut the box (the latter was a favorite pub game involving dice). Make yourself a nice cup of tea and enjoy the pictures.
