What does poor executive functioning look like? by Alis ‘Executive functioning’ is a strange term. I prefer to describe it as “the ability to carry out the normal tasks of life.” If we look at the bigger picture, these tasks are things such as: going to work, visiting a friend, doing the grocery shopping, getting up in the morning, etc. If we zoom in, these tasks are: planning, organising, strategising, paying attention to and remembering details, and managing time and space. The thing that allows us to do all of these tasks successfully is the set of mental processes we each have, that helps connect past experience with present action. It is thought that people with ASD have poor executive functioning, in comparison to the general population.
