What is it with people that they expect other people to behave better just because its the 21st Century? Oprah rightly tore into racist Clippers owner Donald Sterling, saying: It feels like a plantation mentality in the 21st century, in 2014. It just doesnt fit. Obama and Kerry continue to be amazed that Putin would try to redraw Europes borders by force in the 21st Century. Do people think all the assholes are going to go away because the Earth is older? Do they think that, what, because we have more technology now, that power-hungry lunatics like Putin are going to take up knitting? That because its 2014 despicable racists like Sterling or that Al Bundy rancher racist dude are going to see the light? It doesnt matter what year it is. It doesnt matter what century we are in. Racists like Sterling, bigots like Rick Santorum, despots like Putin, and genocidal maniacs like Syrias Bashar al-Assad are here now, and versions of them will be here five hundred years from now. Its up to us to make sure they have as little influence as possible. Its easy to do with a goof like Sterling . . . a little tougher with world leaders like Putin and as-Assad.
