What places are coming to your mind when you think about tourism - TopicsExpress

What places are coming to your mind when you think about tourism in Kazakhstan? Almaty mountains? Charyn? Or Borovoe? But apart from amazing natural sites, Kazakhstan also has something to offer for those who are interested in a more extreme type of tourism. In particular we mean a tourism across man-made sites or techno-tourism. And Kazakhstan could benefit a lot from it and that is why. During the Soviet period a stunning military infrastructure was built in the desert and almost inhabitant parts of central and western Kazakhstan. Sary-Shagan, Aralsk network (military camps) - generally speaking almost every anti-aircraft warfare item built in USSR from 60s till its collapse was commissioned thanks to these testing grounds. These places were even used to test such exotic things as laser weapon (Terra Project) and the only functioning anti-ballistic missile system A-135 (nuclear strike shield). Currently the infrastructure is left and significantly damaged. Very few objects are still used, like Balkhash facilities, but all the rest is not functional anymore. Now the grounds are visited by individual enthusiasts (photos attached are made by such group of enthusiasts from Russia), who are organizing the trip themselves to touch the history of cold war. At some point in time it was possible to stop the uncontrolled destruction in order to bring here tourists as it is done in many parts of the world. But now the options are either to show the demolished sites or to invest money in reconstructing the grounds. Unfortunately, it seems that the first option is much more realistic.
