What we have argued strongly for in direct communication with #CITES representatives is that the only responsible solution regarding the ivory trade - is to stop giving signals that traders, the carving industry and potential ivory buyers will see as an indication that more ivory will be available sooner or later. The way forward is to ban all trade, and immediately drop the discussion about (read: shelf) the so called DMM mentioned in the linked article. Unfortunately CITES didn’t follow the advice from us and many other conservationists. Before lunch today CITES decided to continue the discussion about the destructive (from our perspective) DMM at SC66, with the CITES Secretariat and UNEP tasked to prepare a document showing a way forward by January 2015. We see this decision as very bad for elephants - and are utterly disappointed. The fight for the future of elephants cannot be won on the ground - with a CITES once again prioritising trade considerations and not conservation, elephants continue to be in deep trouble.
