When I first met Professor Russell Jones, I was greeted with Lu ho bo? or How are you? in the Hokkien dialect. He then switched to Malay, a beautiful one, sprinkled with wit & wisdom - not surprisingly for he is an expert on classical Malay literature. Indeed, at 88, he is the last surviving guru from the old school British orientalist era who has researched much on the Malay language and culture, after publishing among others: Loan Words in Malay, Chinese Names Traditions, the two distinct forms of Minnan (Hokkien) dialects, and founding the Malay/Indonesian Etymological Project. Whats even more inspiring, is his current research on the paper & watermarks of Malay manuscripts ( in which he is looking for a new generation of scholars to pass the baton to - any takers?! ) Heres what Professor Jones shared over lunch on what we called the Hokkien dialect?
