When I packed my labor bag for my daughters birth 22 years ago, I had the soundtrack form the movie Cry Freedom in the boom box. The rich choral and instrumental harmony are similar to Christian Gospel music by Hezekaiah Wlaker, John P. Kee, Donnie McClurkin, Kirk Franklin. Thats a sound that just stirs me---irrespective of the lyrics. It just amps my soul energy up. Theres nothing like it to me. When I hear the Nkosi Sikilel i Afrika, I dont need to undertsand the words to be moved the same way. Some of my people must be from down that way, too. Anyway, I think black gospel music and country music (which is a form of the blues) are the last genres of music in this hemisphere that retain the emphasis on harmony in a numerically satisfying way--to me. I was surprised to see Nelly now listed in the country genre on Spotify.
